This is the first post in a blog series called “Upside Down Tomato Garden”
So while looking to up pot my Roma Tomatoes I ran across one of the commercial upside down planting kits. It included soil (which I already have plenty) seeds (which I don’t need) and the upside down pot. The kit cost $35.00 and that doesn’t include anywhere to hang them.
I have never tried to grow tomatoes upside down before so I figured I would give it a try this year, and seeing the cost of the kit, that got my DIY bug going!
I grabbed 2 5-gallon buckets and a large fence post type piece of wood. I had a 2×4 at home already. I got home, put a T on top of the post and on the bottom (helps anchor it), and buried the post about 2’ down.
I cut holes in the bottom of the 5-gallon buckets and planted the tomatoes. I then hung the plants from the post. Filled with potting soil and topped of with fall leaves that I saved the tomatoes are now upside down!
All this for a cost of less than $10.00 and I can hang 2 tomatoes!
I also planted on Roma Tomato in a 5-Gallon bucket conventionally and placed it right next to the upside down plants to compare production and health!
Stay Tuned!
