Here in zone 9 the heat of summer is starting to show up already and it is time for some heat tolerant vegetables. 3 of my favorite hot weather crops to grow are Okra, Hot Peppers and Cow Peas.
Okra loves the heat and can produce quite heavily in the heat of the south! Fried okra is a favorite in the south for many people!
Hot Peppers of many types will grow well in the heat and many of them even require high temperatures to produce. Another great aspect of hot peppers is they do not require a lot of water so the heat drying the soil out is not as big of a problem as it could be with other crops.
Cow Peas, also known as black-eyed peas are one of the few legumes that grow in the heat. They are often used in southern soups and other dishes of the sort, but can also make a GREAT green manure for fall crops!
