Starting Tomatoes Indoors

February is a great time to start Tomatoes indoors.  By the time the plants are large enough and hardy enough to be moved outdoors the weather will be just right!

Starting Tomatoe Seeds

  • Sow seeds 1/4″ deep
  • Keep planting medium damp
  • Keep planting medium warm (around 75 degrees)
  • Once plant sprouts keep under good light

Sow Seeds 1/4″ deep

Tomato seeds do not need to be sown very deep, 1/4″ is normaly enough.  Use a high quality seed mix or peat based seed pods.

Keep planting medium damp

Most seeds require the soil to be damp to sprout and tomatoes are no different.  The soil should be about as damp as a wrung out sponge, but not dripping wet.

Keep planting medium warm

The warmer the soil the fast a seed will germinate.  Tomatoes tend to germinate well at 75 degrees

After Germination keep seedlings under good light

A south facing window works great to help young plants grow.  If this is not possible, a good grow light kept just a few inches above the plants will help them grow quickly!
