Spring Blooming Bulbs – Brighten Up Your Garden Today!
If you
love the sight of spring flowers blooming, plant some spring-blooming bulbs
and you’ll be greeted by colour every spring. You’ll want to check out your
gardening zone so that you know when to plant for your area. Most bulbs that
will bloom in spring need to get into the ground in the fall. And you’ll
also want to see if you’re planting bulbs that are perennial and will bloom
each year. It’s best to get perennials to fill in your garden so you’ll have
delightful specimens to look at after the winter thaw.
Consider bulbs that are easy to grow and are known to resist pests like
moles, squirrels and deer. The last thing you want is for your newly planted
bulbs to be eaten by wildlife. If you have a lot of issues with deer or
other critters in your yard, consider planting your bulbs in a container.
Keep in mind that bulbs in a container make a terrific Mother’s Day gift or
eco-friendly springtime wedding favour too! Just add a ribbon and a little
note card for a beautiful presentation to your mom or wedding guests.
Here are some bulbs that will flower in spring and are also less
appealing to wildlife.
Alliums come from the onion family, so you can imagine that they probably
don’t taste too good to wild animals. They will look pretty as ornamentals
in your garden though. They usually have puffy heads that show up early
spring. They come in all kinds of colours and variations, so no matter what
look your aiming for, you’re likely to find it. They love the sun and poke
their heads out late spring.
Daffodils are spring favourites because they are so lovely and delicate.
There are hundreds of varieties of daffodils so you’ll have a wide range to
choose from. Mix and match colours from oranges to whites and yellows. You
can make a whole daffodil garden or just include the bulbs as part of a
larger garden design. They’ll only bloom in early spring, so plan to have
other colour in the garden to take their place when they’re dying down. It’s
lovely to see daffodils popping up as an announcement of spring’s arrival.
And they’re very easy to grow as well as being deer-resistant.
The crocus bulb is the cousin to the daffodil. We expect to see them
together in spring. Although the species aren’t related, what would spring
be without these two lovely flowers? Crocus are often purple and will come
right up through the snow. They are so pretty when sprinkled throughout a
walkway or yard. They can thrive in the sun or even with partial shade.
There easy to grow and will be there waiting for you at the end of winter.
Hyacinths are beautiful spring bloomers and they also have a delightful
fragrance. You’ll be thrilled to walk out into the garden and find that the
hyacinths are in bloom. These bulbs will spread, so you won’t have to do
much work to get a whole oasis of flowers. Come mid spring, you’ll see these
flowers peeping out even before the leaves on the trees.
Who hasn’t fallen under the spell of the bell-shaped Lily of the Valley?
These darling and sweet little flowers show their faces only for a short
time in the late spring and then say goodbye. Perhaps that’s why they’re so
precious. There only around for a short while. The best part is that deer
and rodents don’t like to eat them, so there’s no danger that your bulbs
will be devoured before you see flowers. The beautiful lily pond flowers
make a great addition to any garden, of course you will need to have a pond,
be aware that you ensure you change your pond filters which you can purchase
at Swallow
Aquatics, and I made that mistake and paid the price!
Get out there and get some spring bulbs planted. You’ll be thrilled to
see the results!
