We’re quickly coming up on my absolutely favorite Zone 9 gardening season — the cool season! I love broccoli and peas and I especially love being able to grow our own.
My first trial with peas a couple years ago was an epic fail. My trellis consisted of two bamboo poles and some trellis netting. Disaster doesn’t even begin to do that hot mess justice. So last fall I wasted a lot of time on Pinterest did my research and then built my own fancy, schmancy pea trellis. All it took was some 1×4’s, hinges, wood screws and some trellis netting.
I started with two 8 foot 1×4’s and two 12 foot 1×4’s from HD. I had them each cut in two at the store. I attached the 1×4’s with wood screws to make 2 frames. Then it was time to figure out the trellis netting. At first I thought I was going to have to tie the netting onto the screws, but then I realized I could actually stretch the netting over the screws if I planned it out well.
I was actually able to take one package of the trellis netting and split in two pieces. Sweet! Next I added the hinges so that the two frames would be connected and stable at the top. Voila! A custom pea trellis that fits the space perfectly!
This design worked out really well and I can’t wait to bring out the pea trellis for another season.
