Herbs: Rosemary

rosemary 24

Here in Zone 9, at least for me, getting rosemary to grow tends to be tricky, though once it takes off you’re pretty well set for the spicy herb.

A mature rosemary plant will be 3 to 5 feet high! Rosemary makes a marvelous, aromatic hedge, which I would love. And rosemary is deer-proof — wonderful for those of you who are lucky enough to have some wide open spaces.

You can start cuttings in full sun in early spring. Big Box Land always has rosemary seedlings, which are a pretty sure bet. However you start them, be sure to space your rosemary plants about 24 inches apart so they can reach their beautiful, bushy potential.

Rosemary is a hardy evergreen shrub, but it will die if the temperature drops below 5 to 10 degrees F. It grows best in dry, sunny areas.
