Learning to Grow and Care for the Honeysuckle Plant

Honeysuckle plants are among the easiest to grow because they are strong, able to adapt to high temperatures and can live through almost anything.  As a vine honeysuckle tend to do much better outdoors where they can really spread out and grow freely.  They can climb up a fence or the side of a home if you let them, or you can place them in a hanging basket and have them spill over in a very beautiful manor.  Finally, some people will plant them right in the ground and let them spread out over a large area.  This can be an effective way to stop erosion if you have a problem with that in your yard.

Honeysuckle Plants Attract Wildlife

Many people love honeysuckle plants because of the fact that they can attract butterflies, hummingbirds and a variety of other beautiful animals.  In the fall the honeysuckle plant produces a fruit from the flowers which will bring in many types of song birds for you to enjoy each year.

Tips for Honeysuckle Planting

Choosing the location of your honeysuckle plant is very important.  They will do best in the full sunlight, but can also do fairly well in areas with more shade.  They don’t require to much water which makes them a very easy to care fore plant.  In many cases once the honeysuckle is planted you don’t have to do anything for them unless there is a long stretch with no rain.  Most people will also add in some balanced fertilizer in the early spring each year to help ensure the plant will grow well, then again in the middle of the year to help encourage heavy blooming of the flowers.

You can begin planting the honeysuckle vine as soon as the threat for frost has passed in your area.  To get ready for this perennial you should dig holes at least a few inches apart and don’t put them to close to any support structure you plan on using either.  If you’re looking to use this beautiful plant as a ground cover then you can spread them out even further and allow them to grow together to give you a thick vine ground cover.  This beautiful vine will produce attractive flowers from late spring through to early fall in many areas with the peak being near the start of summer.

Planting Honeysuckle To Climb

If you want to use the honeysuckle plant to help cover a fence or other support structure you want to make sure you put the seed or root cutting at least a foot away from the structure.  Also, make sure the support structure is already in place so you don’t risk damaging the root system of the plant.  As the vine begins to grow begin to guide it towards the structure using small stakes which can be carefully put in the ground.  As it continues to grow it will be quite simple to lead it right up to the fence and then it will keep climbing on its own with little need for further assistance.
